MY MOMS DAY WAS SPENT...
|
 |

May 11, 2008 08:18pm (EST)
Holding a Tupperware bowl in front of Kyle’s face! My poor baby. Man, he is so sick. He and Dad were getting ready to leave the house to go grab some breakfast. I told Kyle to go get his shoes so I could put them on. As he was coming over to me with two different shoes in his hands, he says “Mommy, I think I have a fever and need some of that purple medicine (Children’s Motrin)”. I asked him if he just wanted Dad to go pick something up for him and bring it home and he agreed… which, is NOT at all like him. If there is somewhere to go, he’s the first one in the car. I made Kyle a little bed on the couch and put in Follow That Bird and in the meantime, Chris went and picked up some breakfast and no sooner did Chris walk through the front door, Kyle is screaming “Mommy… I am gonna spit up (which is what he refers to as throw up), I am gonna spit up”. I wish I had a video of this event for you all. I literally made it from one end of the house, to the Tupperware cabinet, to the couch where I hold his head into the bowl; within milliseconds. I mean really, I felt like one of Charlie’s Angels; jumping, doing flips, and landing at the desired location…. Just in the nick of time! I don’t think I could relive that moment in time if I wanted to! Anyways, I think (and pray) that it is just the stomach flu and that he feels better tomorrow. The last I checked his fever was up again to 103.1, so I gave him some more Motrin and he is back up in his bed.
Luckily, Katie is fine. We go in for the initial ENT appointment tomorrow at 11:15am. My mom is coming into town to watch Kyle since he cannot go to school and Chris will be flying out to Vancouver for work in the morning.
Although today may not have been the most glamorous day of the year, we did have a good time yesterday hanging out in the yard doing yard work. Kyle and I painted a bench together. Kyle and Katie gave me what “they” got me for Mother’s Day…. A new mountain bike…. (which; I have been asking for!) I am so pumped for the summer weather to return for good, so I can begin taking some evening rides around the neighborhood.
I really, really hope all of you Moms out there had a wonderful day with your children and/ or angels. What a blessing and an honor it is to be able to be called “Mom”… even if it is followed by “I am gonna spit up”! Would NOT trade it for anything!
Love, Kelly

HAS IT REALLY BEEN THAT LONG?!
|
 |

May 06, 2008 07:20pm (EST)
Hey…. Anyone remember me??!!! I just could not believe it when I saw the date of my last post. Has it really been that long?! Let’s see… to be quite honest I have NO clue what has kept me away from SHARE this long (too entirely long, might I add). I cannot believe Kyle is singing his ABC’s, Katarina is going to be a big sis, Little Lauryn is already 2 weeks old, Braden is looking more a more like a little man, LG is getting cuter with each passing day, Quinn’s healthy streak ended (hope she’s feeling better), London’s going to start wearing blue, green, and purple nail polish!, Camden now has a little crush…on James!, I do hope Emerson got that ‘freaking banana’ when Denise reached the balloons and savored each and every bite!, etc. I have missed so much! I feel lost. Anyways, back to my reality. Here’s what has been going on with Katie girl:
1.Katie’s eye test went great. The Opthamologist said everything looks ‘normal’. He said she is still a bit far sighted, but no big deal.
2.Our BIG hearing screen is Thursday morning at 7.30 am. We are going to the new Peyton Manning Hospital for this one. We are supposed to get there at 7.30 to register, they will take Katie back and put her to sleep, and then they will conduct the screen. Hopefully, we will be able to get a definite answer on Katie’s hearing abilities/ disabilities. I am so nervous about all of this. Katie hasn’t been put to sleep since we were back in the NICU and I just hope it all goes okay.
3.Katie has started (almost) sitting up by herself while going from the laying position. A few nights ago, Katie actually got herself into the crawling position and started walking back and forth. She thought she was some pretty big stuff!
4.Katie has started putting food into her mouth BY HERSELF!!! In fact, she has now started placing everything into her mouth! She really doesn’t get the entire concept of once the food is in her mouth, she needs to bite a piece off, and then chew it until it is in small enough pieces to be able to swallow. Small steps….
5.She is now singing bits and pieces of her ABC’s, Pat A Cake, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
6.She is pointing to her nose when you ask her where it is. Katie LOVES to look at herself in the mirror too. She’s great… she talks to herself, waves at herself, and makes funny faces at herself.
7.I took Katie in today to get her AFO’s looked at to ensure they were still fitting correctly and all is well with them.
8.We continue PT, OT, ST, and DT weekly.
It is really hard to believe that Katie will be turning 2 in August. I could have done without the first 5 months, but since getting her home…. The time has flown. I wait and I wait, we work with Katie and we work, we wonder if she is ever going to get some skills and be able to do things that other children her age are doing…. And then within a two week span, she makes more progress than she sometimes makes in three months. I just have to come to terms with the fact that Katie will do everything in HER time and not ours and it will become much easier! We are getting there slowly but surely. She has come SO far after her rough start. I really could not be more proud of my little Bug…. Who is now becoming more of a BIG Bug!
A little on Kyle- he started swim lessons tonight and had a ball! He cannot wait to go back on Thursday evening. He has been to several birthday parties recently. Other than that, he’s about the same. Growing taller and taller every day! I hope everyone is well. Going to jump off of here and try to catch up on what is transpiring in the Indiana primary. I don’t think they have yet announced who won the Presidential vote for IN.
Take care and please think good thoughts for Katelyn on Thursday morning and send up some prayers that all goes okay for us. Thanks!
Love, Kelly

HO HUM.....

Apr 02, 2008 02:31pm (EST)
Some of you are probably wondering how Katie’s hearing screen went a couple of weeks ago. I must say… not well. I took her in and she did well in the hearing booth again, but as soon as the Audiologist put those things into her ears, Katie flipped. So, there were no answers at that appointment. Well, yesterday after physical therapy I took her over to the Audiologist. The plan went off without a hitch. As I was driving over, Katie passed out in her car seat. I pulled up to the Hearing Center and the Audiologist (Amber) jumped into the car with her equipment and I drove to a small neighborhood and parked. Katie stayed asleep. Thank goodness! So, we were finally able to get the test completed. I guess it measures the movement of the ear canal hairs when the noise goes in. Katie scored 2 out of 4 in her right ear and 0 out of 4 in her left. Amber said that the only reason that this would be skewed would be if there was fluid or infection in the ears. Amber looked inside both ears and did not see any fluid. So, anyways... we are back to having to do the ABR (the test where she has to be sedated for). I think we are going to take her over to St. Vincent Hospital to get that one done. Amber is going to call our Pediatrician and he will have to make the referral to get the test completed. We need to try to get the hearing thing figured out, so that if we need to be looking into cochlear implants, we can begin that journey.
Katie also has an eye test on the 23rd. We haven’t been there in a while, so I hope that one goes well. She has been speaking a lot more has started putting two words together. "I do" is her favorite. She is getting pretty good with sign language too. She knows "more, all done, mine, hat, and play". She took a few forward steps the other day in her pony walker. We had to hold her pacifier in front of her for motivation, but she did it!
Katie has been waking up a lot throughout the night. She cries out until we feed her a bottle. I swear it is becoming worse than having an infant! I spoke with the OT about it and I think Katie’s stomach is ready for real, solid food but her brain and mouth aren’t ready for it. So, I guess I am going to have to have a discussion with her mouth and brain before we get any more sleep!
Oh and my younger sister is pregnant. At this point, I think she is probably 17 weeks. She’s due around the start of September. I found out a few weeks ago. She requested to be tested for CMV and the test came back negative. Go figure…the most common virus in the world and every single person that I know that has been tested has been negative??!!! This pregnancy wasn’t exactly planned. My sister and her fiancé were planning on a 2009 wedding, but have now pushed the date up and are now looking for homes. Anyways, we, as a family, have decided to not bring Katie around Sarah. I would just feel horrible if she ended up catching CMV while pregnant, even though logically I am aware Sarah could get it from anyone and logically, I know that Katie is probably the ‘safest’ person for Sarah to be around given that we know Katie’s CMV count is so low, but why take the risk? Ya know? So, we weren’t able to see Sarah on Easter and she won’t be around for all of the summer birthdays parties and such.
Well, that’s about all I guess. Chris has been out of town for work a lot lately, so I have been running the munchkins all over town. He leaves again for Phoenix on Tuesday. Just feeling kind of crappy, at least the sun is shining today, right?! It could be worse, right Kate?! One day at a time. Sorry I haven’t been responding to your blogs here lately… as always, I have been keeping up on them, but just been feelin’ well… you guys understand. I think I need a stronger antidepressant!

LIFE LESSONS AREN'T ALWAYS THE SAME AS THE IMPORTANT LESSONS
|
 |

Mar 21, 2008 06:05pm (EST)
It’s funny how life works. After high school, I decided to attend a small, private university in Lexington, KY. The decision was mainly made due to athletics. I wanted to continue playing soccer at a collegiate level. So, after high school graduation, my Mom and Dad drove me 6 ½ hours south, where I would spend the next 4 years of my life (God willing!). Aside from a few weeks in the summer between my Junior and Senior year of high school when I traveled throughout Europe playing soccer with a team selected out of Northwest Indiana, this would be the first time I was this far away from home for a lengthy amount of time. I would leave behind the only friends I knew, all of my immediate family, my coaches, my teachers, etc. only to enter into my new world of ‘unknowns’. I did not know a soul in the entire state of Kentucky! I had to start from scratch and make all new friends and attempt to make a life of my own. At the time, I remember thinking this will be the HARDEST thing that I will ever have to do and if I can make it through this then I can make it through anything. Ha!!! During my Junior year in college, I became my sorority President, while also managing to work three jobs and continuing to stay on top of my studies, and at this point again, I thought this will be the HARDEST thing that I will ever have to do and if I can make it through this then I can make it through anything. Ha!!!
Don’t get me wrong, I learned some very valuable life lessons throughout those years and they definitely played a role in the person that I am today, but the really ‘important’ lessons were still to be learned. I went on to up and move after graduating college, yet again moved to a city where I knew absolutely no one. It just happened to be that I was offered (what I thought to be) an ideal position in Senior Healthcare, so Indianapolis is where I headed. I was able to move back closer to my family. This time they were only about 2 ½ hours away. This time it was a little harder to meet friends due to the lack of free time, so many of my friends came from work. That’s what I did to keep busy….. work, work, and work some more! I met Chris during this time, dated him, married him, and the dang thought was back again, this (juggling marriage, work, and a social life)will be the HARDEST thing that I will ever have to do and if I can succeed at this then I can succeed at anything. Ha!!!
We got pregnant with Kyle about 9 months after we were married. Being pregnant was awesome… gaining 70 pounds was even more awesome (however, having to lose that weight was not so awesome!)… and the end result of having a happy, healthy baby boy topped it all off. It was great for the first few days because I could tell the nurse to take him back to the nursery if I wanted to sleep!! Then we got home and I thought “Man, this kid is hard work! This will certainly be the HARDEST thing that I will ever have to do and if I can make it through this then I can make it through anything. Ha!!!”
Then along came Miss Katelyn. We had to come to terms that we just had a baby with congenital CMV. We were told that her future would be very questionable. We were told that we would be spending until Katie’s due date in the NICU. 8 weeks turned into 4 ½ months in the NICU. We were finally able to bring her home January 13th. Every single day of those 5 months, I thought this will certainly be the HARDEST thing that I will ever have to do and if I can just make it through this then I can make it through anything”.
So, I have now decided NOT TO ever think this thought again, who knows what is going to be placed in front of me next??! It’s funny how the perception of “Hard” changes with time, circumstances, and challenges. What is “Hard” to one may not be the same level of “Hard” to another. I read so many blogs on here and think “My goodness, these women/ men are so strong and such great role models. I cannot imagine how difficult and physically, emotionally draining their days must be”. Yet, we all do it. We all make it to the next day. We all stand by our kids and why?? I can’t answer for everyone, but I know I do it because the rewards are SOOOO worth it. The hugs and the smiles, you know…. The ‘real’ successes??!!!
Have a wonderful Easter weekend!
Love, Kelly
P.S. If I could ask you all to pray for another Baby Katie (AKA Green bean), I would greatly appreciate it!

BEEN AWHILE....
|
 |

Mar 17, 2008 06:15pm (EST)
Oh me oh my…. I am fully aware that I am preaching to the choir here…. But, I swear, if spring does not arrive soon I may just check myself into the Looney Bin. I am certain that, at this point, I meet all necessary requirements for placement! Since my last entry, Kyle got sick AGAIN. He started running a very high temperature and complaining that his throat and ears hurt. So, back to the doctor’s office a.k.a. our second home we went. Strep swab and two seconds later a positive result and a double ear infection to boot. Poor Kyle. The doctor wrote him and Katie a script and sent us home. We went back three days later for Katie’s 18 month check- up and Kyle’s 4 year old check- up. Both kids received Hepatitis A vaccines. They both looked good. Kyle weighed in at 44 lbs (89%), 45 inches (93%). Katie weighed in at 23 lbs 2 ounces (19%) and her height was 32 inches (25%). Her head circumference was at the 24% too. We decided to discontinue all labs unless something occurs to warrant more being drawn; with exception of the CMV viral load test and we will take her into the lab annually from here on out until the load gets to 0. I don’t think that will take very long for that to occur, given that the last round came back at 100.
Katie has been doing really well in therapy lately. She has been wearing her AFO’s daily and is placing more and more weight on her legs. Her personality has started to come out full force. She is a silly little girl. She loves, loves , loves Kyle. Kyle could do and say just about anything to her and she will crack up….. with one exception- when he tries to take a toy away from her and in the manner of any 18 month old child, she will cry and scream at him! It is really funny. They really do fight over toys! Hilarious! She's funny. She really has NO concept of her facial proportions unless she is sitting in front of a mirror. It's weird. I think that is why she won't put anything into her mouth.... she doesn't know that it is there. Speech therapy said that he was going to work on that. I think we need to get one of those big mirrors that she can sit in front of and watch herself in. Maybe she'll figure out that she has a face.
I took Katie to get a haircut last Saturday and she got so mad that she threw up all over the place. The place was packed. All of these kids and Moms were looking at us like we were strange. Oh well! I've been through worse, huh?
Kyle was so funny this morning. I took out his green shirt (that he has been asking to wear since I bought it a month ago) and he said "Nooo..... Mom, that is for me to wear on Danika Patrick Day" Ha!!! Then, he woke up this morning and came to our room and said "Happy Valentine's Day!" At least he knew it was a day that was out of the norm, I guess! He was really excited to get to put his green shirt on. He said- "Mom, when I get home from school, we need to put this in the wash, so I can wear it tomorrow too. I like green". He is a NUT!
Well, I think that is about it for now. I will attach some recent pictures of the kids and just for you Carissa…. one of me playing Wii (Believe it or not, I was actually bowling here… You do have to kick your leg when you bowl, right?!! It’s all about the follow- through!!!). I hope you all had a wonderful “Danika Patrick” Day!
Love, Kelly
PS We have another hearing test tomorrow. Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts tonight.

KYLE IS TURNING 4!
|
 |

Mar 02, 2008 01:38pm (EST)
Goodness gracious… it has been forever! Katie has been sick again with some sort of respiratory thing. I think I am going to try to get her into the doctor tomorrow to get her checked out. Don’t get me wrong, she is better than she was a few days ago, but I really would love to know if the cause of her constant phlegmy and coughing is simply due to the winter bugs or if there is an underlying cause like allergies or asthma. I don’t want to jump the gun, but prior to being discharged from the NICU, it was mentioned that they were going to test Katelyn for Cystic Fibrosis, mainly at that time it was due to the lack of weight gain and poor appetite, but at that time they said that they wanted to hold off to do the sweat test until she was older if she was still exhibiting the same problems. Well, the appetite and weight gain is no longer an issue for the Bug, but I want to say that I read somewhere that a symptom of CF is continual bronchial troubles. So, anyways I want to ask the Pediatrician about that. Do you guys know anything about this? I did go to the Medical Conditions file and have read just enough to be dangerous!
The kids are good. We celebrated Kyle’s 4th Birthday yesterday here at home. He had a great time with his cousins, Kelsey and Addison. We went with the Spiderman theme. My family was the only ones that were able to make the party, but we had a TON of fun! We just got the Wii this week, so we played each other all day in boxing, bowling, golf, baseball, and tennis. Kelsey and Kyle even boxed each other. They were pretty funny to watch! Actually, we all looked fairly ridiculous. I am pretty animated when I play; everyone likes to laugh at me. I am one of those people that must hook the controller around my hand; otherwise it would fly right across the room! I contemplated posting a picture of all of us playing, but I may be disowned by my family! Anyways, Kyle got some pretty cool gifts. He loves to build cars, boats, and helicopters with his new Lego’s and we cannot tear his new ‘Lobster’ a.k.a. Leapster Max away from him! So, Kyle’s birthday is really on Wednesday, so we are going to take in a cookie cake and some Capri Sun drinks for his pre-school class, so he ‘thinks’ that Wednesday will be his birthday party with all of his friends! Lucky boy, two parties in one week!
Aside from the constant coughing, Katie has been doing okay. She now has some signing down. She is pretty good with “more” and “all done”. She is now shaking her head and saying “no” at the same time. She is saying “up” when she wants you to pick her up. She has mastered waving hello and goodbye. She now points at things that she wants you to see. We got Katie’s AFO’s about a week ago. She despised them at first, but is getting better about letting us put them on her. She has to wear them all day, every day, on both legs. Funny story- we have been placing her in front of this big mirror while she plays and I came around the corner a couple of days ago, only to see her looking in the mirror at herself, smiling, and running her hands through her hair; she seemed pretty happy with what she saw! I guess it was a good hair day! My vain little thing!
Well, I hope that you all are doing well and getting geared up for The Walk this year. Oh… how I cannot wait to say Farewell to winter!

IS SPRING ALMOST HERE?
|
 |

Feb 19, 2008 09:29am (EST)
Okay…. Really what is the countdown until Spring gets here? This winter has been horrible! I think we have had a total of three days where we were all four healthy this entire season. Let’s see, it’s been so long since I have been able to jump on here, mainly because I have been cleaning up throw- up off of every square inch of flooring in our home. To catch you up to date, last Tuesday was my birthday so Chris surprised me and took me out to Ruth Chris’ for dinner, were he had also invited some couples there waiting to celebrate with us. It was a great night. Then, on Friday afternoon, Chris’s parents showed up here to watch the kids for the weekend and Chris had surprised me with a weekend get away to a resort about three hours away. What a wonderful surprise. We got on the road to come home on Sunday morning and as soon as we walked in the door, Kyle threw up all over the place. He was running between a 103.9 and 105.6 temperature and was partially delirious. I got him into the tub, gave him some Motrin, and put some cold compresses on his forehead and got the temperature down to 102.6. Welcome home, right?!!! We called the Pediatrician Monday morning and got him in at 3 pm. They swabbed him for the Influenza A virus and whatdoya know?…. POSITIVE (also accompanied by an ear infection). Arggghhhh… I am so tired of sickness. The Pediatrician sent us home with some meds for both Kyle and Katie. Katie came down with it on Tuesday night. She stayed up ALL night throwing up, everything. We took her into the doc on Wednesday and POSITIVE for Influenza A (accompanied by Pink eye), as well. So, we have been on breathing treatments, meds, and have spent more time on our hands and knees cleaning than desired for the past week. I had to cancel every therapy session for Katie last week because she was feeling so puny.
Kyle actually started feeling better on Wednesday and then I go and pick him up at school today and he is sitting in a chair, his eyes welled up with tears, trying to fight back crying when I walked through the door. I bent down to his height and he gave me a big hug and said “Mommy, I want to go home and lay on the couch. Will you cover me up with your blanket? I am sick again.” Awww…. His teacher said Kyle was on the verge of tears all day (which, is not like him at all. He loves, loves, loves to go to school), but he wouldn’t tell her what was wrong. He is running a low- grade temperature, does not have an appetite, and is pretty lethargic, but I am not sure what is actually wrong, aside that he does not feel good.
I believe Katie is on the road to recovery finally. She is still congested and coughing, but at least she has her appetite back and is keeping things down again. We had Occupational therapy today and Katie ate a few bites of Cheetos!! The therapist said she was chomping much better than she had ever seen her do before. She signed “more” and said “All done” and “Up, up, up” today. She did really well.
That’s about all that has been going on here. I feel badly because I have really only been reading everyone’s blogs (more as a form of relaxation) and have not been replying on them (more due to pure exhaustion), but I promise when things get back full swing, you’ll see me on them! I hope everyone’s week is much better than the last!
Love, Kelly

BIGGER NEWS THAN.....
|
 |

Feb 04, 2008 10:03am (EST)
I really did not have any intention of blogging again until later in the week, however I have some pretty BIG news that I want to share with all of the Katie supporters….
This news is bigger than the Super Bowl outcome, bigger than all of the Mardi Gras celebrations about ready to occur, bigger than Super Tuesday, and much bigger than Mommy’s 30th Birthday! (At least it is to us!!! And for you Mom’s that have had or are going through eating challenges… you will know where I am coming from!)
I am fairly certain that all of you ladies in Iowa probably heard me on Saturday. I tried screaming loud enough to reach KC, Maine, Texas, etc. but I’m not sure if it made it to you guys or not!! In the case that the message made it there and was inaudible, it went something like this:
“KATIE TOOK MANY, MANY SMALL BITES OF A GARLIC BISCUIT AT DINNER ON SATURDAY. SHE MOVED THEM AROUND IN HER MOUTH, CHEWED THEM UP LIKE A BIG GIRL, AND SWALLOWED THEM….. WITHOUT EVEN GAGGING!!! AND THEN EVEN OPENED HER MOUTH FOR ME TO PLACE MORE IN THERE!!!!”
Grammy, Grampy, Aunt Beth, Kelsey and Addy (Katie’s only cousins), Aunt Sarah and Jason were in town and we all went to dinner and then came back to our home for some cake and then it happened again!!!
“KATIE ATE CHOCOLATE BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!!”
I hoped and prayed that this wasn’t a one- time thing for Katie, so I attempted to get her to eat some toast and some soft carrots yesterday afternoon and SHE DID!!!
The best birthday present a Mommy could ever get!!! Personally, I think Katie has a hard time not being the center of attention, so she had to figure out a way to make everyone pay attention to her!!! Right!!! As if these kids aren’t ALWAYS the center of attention!!
I hope everyone has a great week. I hope to jump back on and get all of my updates on your kiddos tonight! Give them all hugs and kisses for me.
Love, Kelly
Some pics of the big moment are attached. I also included a pic with Kyle playing with Kelsey's Leapster (or as he calls it... Lobster). He was pretty into it, as you can tell! We didn't hear a peep out of him while it was his turn to play with it!
 Garlic biscuit- first success food
 Hmmm I can do this!
